My Great Grandma used to always tells us that if it snowed and stayed on the ground at least 3 days we would have another snow coming our way soon, usually within two weeks. I never paid much mind to this because I thought it was something she made up. So I was definitely surprised when I’ve heard that same phrase from many people today. They all keep saying the snow’s been on the ground over 3 days now, so we’ll be getting another snow storm soon.
The truth is that saying proved true this year. Our Christmas snow stayed on the ground exactly 3 days, and 2 weeks later we got hit with our massive snow storm. That’s got me wondering when the next one is going to hit. I honestly hope we don’t get another snow in the next 2 weeks because we’re already dealing with the mess that was created by this one. School is still out because of the road conditions, and I didn’t realize how bad the roads still are until we met up with my Dad and Step Mom for dinner tonight.
We ventured out yesterday, but we only went down the road to the Salem Walmart, and surprisingly most of those back roads have cleared up. There were still a few icy spots here and there, but nothing bad. I was a little shocked when we headed out tonight on the main roads to find that most of them were still a horrible mess. The hill we wrecked on Christmas night is still a solid sheet of ice with one lane of cleared tracks in the middle. Cars in both directions were having to stop to take turns crossing it, and I thought that it was horrible because it is one of the main highways in our county and usually one of the first to be plowed/salted.
When we got to the restaurant the parking lot of half way cleared, so everyone was piling up on that side of the lot to stay off the ice. That caused a lot of other people to be blocked in, and one of the wait staff was out there trying to direct people out of spots and others into spots. Another guy we know who normally works the kitchen was up on a latter scraping ice off the two security cameras on the front of the building. I kind of wish we’d decided to stay in tonight because I hate taking the baby out when it’s still this bad out. We wouldn’t have gone had I known the roads were still so bad.
I’ll be glad when the rain moves in next week because it’s supposed to be a lot warmer, and hopefully it’ll help wash away a bunch of the ice that will be left. I know a good bit of it will melt with the warmer temps this weekend, but I saw ice 2” thick in some spots that don’t see much sunlight during the day. We still have 7” of snow with about 1/2” of ice on top of it on the backside of the house where the sun never hits. I bet it’s going to take forever to melt away.
