Email Overload

I think one of my favorite things about owning a Smartphone is the ability to have my email at my fingertips no matter where I am or what I’m doing. It definitely comes in handy since a lot of my business is conducted through email, and I don’t miss opportunities because I was away from my computer for too long.

I’ve learned there can be a downside to having my email on my phone constantly, though. Seeing it there means I often forget to download my email on my computer for days. By the time I do it can sometimes be such a large amount of email that it bogs down my internet connection and takes forever to load. Then I have to sort through massive piles of junk mail just to find what I’m looking for.

That’s what I’m doing right now. I received a very important email this morning that contained some paperwork I must print, sign, scan, and return all before the end of the day. Normally I can do this from my phone as well (the downloading part), but today it’s not cooperating. Because I’ve been lazy I’m sitting here waiting for over 1000 messages, mostly scam mail and junk mail from Medical Malpractice Insurance Companies and such, to download from the last week just so I can get to the one. You may say just login to your web mail, find the one you want, and be done with it. Yeah, it’s not that simple. This one was sent to my Charter email account, and frankly Charter’s web mail sucks. It takes longer for it to load than for my messages to download through my email client. Either way I have realized the spam catcher on my phone is much better than the ones through Charter’s mail and my email client combined. I can’t believe how many spam messages are showing up in my inbox that I never see on my phone.

So yeah this post is basically a reminder to myself to stop being lazy. I need to download my email at least a couple times a day, and find a new client with a much better spam filter.

Beautiful Days & Saving Money

You don’t know how thankful I am that the weather cooled off a bit today. We’re still in the upper 80s, but that’s much better than the upper 90s with what has felt like 100% humidity we started the week with. I’ve been so afraid to take Ellie outside for more than 5 or 10 minutes at a time because it’s so hot. The pool and sprinkler have definitely been a staple!

We went outside for a few minutes this morning, and it felt great out there with a nice cool breeze blowing. We walked down to see the horses, and we spent a few minutes feeding them carrots before we came back inside for nap time. Hopefully she’ll take a nice long nap, and we can go back outside and play in the pool this afternoon before the storms move in tonight.

While she naps I’m going to get some stuff done around here. I got caught up on all my work yesterday, but I got a couple computers to fix in this morning. I’m going get those fixed, do some research on a problem my Dad is having with his router that I can’t seem to fix (after spending hours on the phone with tech support & their fixes not working either), and hopefully Ellie will sleep long enough to allow me to make some phone calls, too.

I need to call Verizon today…again. I’ve been calling them every few days for a couple weeks now, and my problem hasn’t been fixed. I pay them way too much to be having a major issue with my phone. I’ve been having an issue with us not being able to make calls between phones on the same plan. I can make and receive calls to anyone else, but we have trouble calling each other. It’s only the first two phones on our plan that have been active for years, too. The other three phones on my plan are my in-law’s phones, and we have no problems calling them, but if I try to call Ben or he tries to call me we have to repeat the call 3 or 4 times before it will even ring once! I don’t know what’s up with it, but Verizon needs to fix it! I wish it were as simple as buying a cell booster antenna, but I don’t think signal has anything to do with it. We can both have full bars and not be able to make calls to each other.

I called Charter yesterday to see if we could lower our bill. I call every 2 or 3 months because that’s when they normally release new promotions. Honestly I’d drop the cable TV all together if I could, but it doesn’t benefit us financially. I’ve had plenty of people ask me why we still have cable tv while we’re struggling financially, but the answer is simple. I have to have internet to work and make a majority of the income that’s keeping us going right now. It’s more expensive to have just the cable internet than it is to have cable and tv. Without a tv package we wouldn’t qualify for a lot of the promotions I’m able to get, and the promotions allow us to have both services for less than or equal to what we’d be paying for just the internet. We don’t have any other options except for dial-up, and I don’t have the time to sit around waiting forever to things to load. I have limited time to work as it is, so keeping the cable is the best option for us. Yeah it takes remembering when a promo ends and making sure we call to find a new promo before it does, but it’s well worth it in my opinion. Yesterday I was able to drop $40 off our bill without changing much at all. I only dropped one thing, and it was a $5 package for channels we don’t really watch anymore. I could have gotten an even lower price if I had agreed to lock into a 2 year plan, but I refuse to do that right now. Another thing I will be doing is purchasing my own modem. Our promo is about to run out for the free modem lease. Currently that is a $5 credit each month, but when our promo runs out the monthly leasing fee is going up to $7/month. I can buy a us modem that will support speeds much higher than I currently have (and be useful for more than a few months) for $29.99 thus saving us money in the long run. That’s something else I need to take care of today!

Anywho I don’t hear babbling coming from the baby monitor anymore, so it’s safe to say Ellie has finally fallen asleep. I need to get my butt in gear and get to work before she decides to cut her nap short!

Restoring My Blogs

As much as I love blogging sometimes I hate dealing with my blogs when something goes wrong. Last week I got hit with a malicious script on Everyday Randomness. It took almost 2 days to discover and remove all the files. I thought I’d gotten rid of everything.

Yesterday I went to login to one of my blogs, and I was met with a big page not found message. I quickly loaded up all the blogs on the same host, and I discovered the same message. I logged into my 1&1 Control Panel, and even though I could login most of the functionality was disabled. I started to freak out a bit, so I opened my email client to send a message to support to find out wtf was going on.

Before I had the chance to even click the new message button I saw an email from 1&1 support. I opened it to discover I’d been temporarily locked out of my account because my web space had essentially been hacked. As I have never operated a newsletter this was discovered. The hacker had infiltrated my web space through a hole in my phpmyadmin plugin on Everyday Randomness, and once in had used my web space to send out a mass amount of spam marketing. It was reported as spam enough for 1&1 to lock down my account while they looked into it, and boy am I glad they did!

24 hours later my account was released back to me with a list of malicious files that had been found very well hidden in one of my directories, and everything was restored back to the way it should be.

That left me with one more issue to solve, so I decided to go ahead and tackle it. The attack was mainly because I was still using a much older version of wordpress on that blog. That is because when I attempted to upgrade my database from mysql 4 to mysql 5 I had some major issues. I gave up for the time being, but after this attack I decided it had to be rectified. This time the issues I had before were no where to be found. The database imported just fine, but even after going through and manually editing everything I was still met with the nasty random characters issue that happens when sometimes updating from a pre-UTF8 blog. I’ve spent the last 4 hours trying every solution I could find with no luck.

Finally I found the UTF8 Sanitize WordPress Plugin, and even though it wasn’t supported for the latest version of WordPress I decided to try it anyway. The plugin worked, and I am happy to say it has saved me from many more hours of aggravation!

So, all of my blogs should now be restored back to normal, but there’s still a chance I have missed something here or there. If you happen to notice anything that doesn’t seem right please leave me a comment letting me know so I can immediately address the issue.
