Live It With Charter Sucks

A few months ago Charter Communications came out with their Live It With Charter promotion. Basically for every dollar you spend on their services you earn so many points. Since we’re still stuck with Charter as our only option for our cable tv and internet I figured I’d sign up for the promotion. I’m giving them my money anyway, so why shouldn’t I earn the points, right?

Well it’s a total crock of shit. We’re considered level 3 Gold membership because our services cost between $95.00-124.99 a month. This means we’re entitled to what they consider certain “perks” for our membership level.

Membership Only Perks:

* Access to the Live It with Charter web site.
* Digital Remote Tutorials and Educational Information.
* Special BONUS Live It with Charter points throughout the year.
* On-time service guarantee including 100 BONUS Live It Points if late.
* Charter partner discounts.
* New service BONUS – 300 Live It with Charter points awarded at 75 points per month over 4 months ( must maintain service to receive bonus); includes wire maintenance, Digital Video Recording, High Definition, additional purchased Digital Boxes, Wireless Home Networking.
* Electronic Funds Transfer BONUS – 300 Live It Points.
* $4.99 bill credit with 6th Video On Demand if all six purchased within 2 months.
* Your membership level will automatically be UPGRADED when you add new qualifying products and services.

Redeem For Exclusive:

* Charter products and receive special promotional pricing.
* Entries into Members-only Sweepstakes for exciting travel and great prizes.
* Merchandise and items from our partners during Redemption Days.

The first thing I find total shit is the on time service guarantee. That’s because they never show up on time. In the 5 years we’ve had service in this house we’ve been lucky if they show up on the right day, much less during our time slot. What’s the time slot? As with most companies like this we either receive an 8am-noon or a 1pm-5pm time slot. Twice I’ve requested my 100 points because they didn’t show up for my appointment at all, but not once have they credited me. Each time even though I have a confirmation # for the scheduled appointment I’m told there’s been a “computer error”, and we have no scheduled appointment.

I’m used to that though. I’m just happy that they do eventually show up because after 5 years of horrible service, we’re lucky if they do. I’ve had people call me directly from the corporate office trying to figure out what was going on because they worked on a simple problem for over a year, but the techs still couldn’t figure it out. I end up telling them how to fix it most of the time, but that’s another rant I’ve already written about many times.

So, what else tells me the Live It With Charter program is a total crock of shit that was made up just to convince naive customers to sign up for additional services they don’t need?

Let’s look at what I can spend my points on. I have accumulated 4,510 points since July. The cheapest thing I can spend my points on is an F-81 barrel. That’s the screw thing on the end of the cable that plugs into the back of your tv, and it costs 400 points. Why am I going to waste points on something like that? The only time it’s going to be replaced is when a tech comes out and replaces a bad one with a new free one! Just about everything in the entire “Charter Mall” is something that is supplied for free by the techs when they fix shit. What’s the most expensive thing I can buy with my 4,510 points…$451 worth of points?

That’s right. I can spend 4,000 points….what cost me $400 to earn on a 6′ A/V cable that I can pick up for about $15. Or I can spend 3600 points on a $10 3 way splitter that the techs provide for free!

What’s even worse is that Charter is trying to do their own version of Mypoints and similar sites. They’ve set up a list of stores where you can shop, and you’ll earn so many Live It With Charter points for every dollar you spend. Who wants to shop through Charter when the “prizes” you can redeem your points for are so shitty?

Yes, they do at least offer gift cards to various stores and restaurants, but the catch is you can only receive those for signing up for new services. The gift card amount depends on the number of services you sign up for.

Charter does offer “Redemption Days” when you can use your points to purchase “some great merchandise from programming partners, ranging from branded clothing and accessories to popular electronics items such as iPods.”  They claim to notify all Live It With Charter members well in advance so they can partake in these days, but I haven’t seen a single “Redemption Day” happen since becoming a member in July…and I do login everyday just to check.

I’m not knocking the fact that Charter is at least offering to give me something in return for all the cash we’ve spent on horrible service, but they should at least take a look at the things they’re offering. Don’t ask me to earn points just to spend on items your techs provide as part of our line maintenance.

HSBC Is Screwing Me

I am NOT very happy right now. As I’m sitting here trying to get a few posts up while I pay bills I noticed something very different about our Yamaha card that’s through HSBC. It seems as if HSBC took it upon themselves to decrease our credit card limit. It wouldn’t be such a big deal, but I thought they were supposed to inform me of all changes in writing, and they definitely didn’t inform me of this.

It’s yet again another ploy by credit card companies to screw us over. Why? Well for starters, that card holds one half of our bike financing. Our financing was split between a Yamaha card with a $8000 limit, and a Polaris card with a $6000 limit. The dealership did that so we would have two cards carrying smaller balances that weren’t considered a high balance card instead of carrying 1 high balance card with a higher limit.

I’ve made double payments on the Yamaha card when I could afford to, and I now have that balance down to a little over $2500. I would be perfectly fine with lowering the limit on the card because I don’t ever plan on purchasing anything on it again, but now hsbc has screwed me by lowering my credit limit to $3000. Why is that bad? Well now instead of carrying a lower balance on a high limit card I’m carrying a high balance on a lower limit card!

I haven’t seen this change happen yet on my Polaris card, but it’s also through HSBC. I expect the limit on that one to drop sometime soon as well.

…And people wonder why I hate financing that’s done through credit cards!

Losers On The Job

Hubby’s in here complaining about having to work tomorrow. Normally he’s got a crew of about 4-5 guys, but tomorrow since it’s a holiday he’ll have all the guys from all the other job sites working for him. That’s because no one can work on the other job sites because they’re all in ritzy gated communities, and no one is allowed in the community to work on holidays.

Hubby hates it because he can’t stand a lot of the guys on the other crews. That’s why they’re not on his crew. They do a half-assed job, a lot of them are what I call the crack head type, and some of the guys have papers to work in the US, but it seems a little fishy to me because most of them look like they’ve barely hit puberty and can’t speak a bit of English.

I have nothing against people who are in this country legally working, but I can’t stand it when people are faking papers. I can’t stand the fact that people like Hubby are expected to learn a second language just because the boss keeps hiring people who can’t understand him. If you can’t speak English, that’s not my problem. If I were to move to France, I’d try to learn French, and the same goes for anywhere else.

Anywho, that’s a rant for another day. Hubby’s just upset about a ton of the guys on the other crews because they don’t know what they’re doing. Half of them claim to have years of experience, but can’t take simple measurements or do simple cuts once they’re hired. I really wish the boss would take the time to do employment screening before hiring half these losers. It’d save him and Hubby both a lot of headaches.

I’m trying to calm him down and make him happy by helping him look for the car cover he’s been wanting for the Blazer. I hope that works. I don’t want to deal with an ill Hubby all night.

Get A Freakin’ Clue

I’ve got this friend who’s been begging me to help him for awhile.  His company needs a business website.  He is a co-owner of the company, and currently they don’t have a business website simply because he hasn’t wanted to shell out the cash to build one.

He’s gotten quotes from different graphic designers, and all of them have given him a price he believes is way too expensive.   Then again, all those quotes have been at least $750, and I can understand why for what he wants.  He also doesn’t know very much about websites, how much effort it takes to build something like he wants, stuff like that.  It took me almost 2 weeks just to teach the man how to insert a photo into an email.
I’m not going into details about what type of site it would be, but he wants a lot including an e-commerce site with all of the company’s products.  I will tell you he’s in furniture, and everything is high end.  The design of the site would have to match the overall appearance of the business.  He wants to hire a professional photographer to take photos of displays he wants showcased on the site.  He wants that included in the price of the design, not someone he has to hire on his own.  Basically he wants the designer to go out of their way to hire a photographer out of the fee they’d be earning.  They’ve all flat out turned down that request because it’s ludicrous.

He also doesn’t understand setup costs and hosting costs, why he has to pay an extra fee monthly for his website to be online, why he has to pay extra for a domain name.  The man is clueless.

What he does know is that he has a friend who does website design, even if she only does it as a hobby/part time on the side.  He knows his friend has always been willing to go out of her way to help him for free when one of his computers needs repaired.  So what does he do?  He calls said friend, who would be me in this case, and asks her to create this site for him so he can save himself $750.

I’m sorry, it’s not going to happen.  First of all, I can’t do a lot of the stuff he wants done.  I’ve told him over and over again I’m not a full fledged graphic designer.  I dabble here and there, and I know enough to do what I need to do.  He’s asking me to do things I would have to learn, and those things make my head spin.  That’s why I haven’t taken the time to learn them yet.  He’s asking me to hunt down a photographer that’s willing to work for free (or basically for a plug on his website) because he “must have these shots”!

He doesn’t understand.  He tells me he knows I can learn how to do the stuff if I don’t know how because he knows how much I love computers.  I tell him it would take me weeks to learn how to do this stuff on a minimal level.  I would have to take time out of my day…away from my own business…to study and learn how to do these things.  Building what he wants would be extremely complicated.  I told him there’s no way I’m going to find a photographer who’s going to work for him for free, and that shouldn’t be my place.  I don’t even have the knowledge to build what he wants.

He doesn’t want to take no for an answer.  He keeps calling, leaving me voicemails, sending me emails, calling my husband and asking him to talk some sense into me…he just doesn’t get it.

Friend or not why should I go out of my way to take time out of my schedule to learn how to do all this stuff just so HE can save money.  I’ve tried to explain to him that it’s a tax write off.  He doesn’t care.  He doesn’t think he should have to shell out the cash in the first place if his friend is good with computers.

He just can’t grasp the concept that I don’t have a freakin’ clue how to build a website like he wants, and even if I did I wouldn’t do it for free anyway.  Yes I would take into consideration our friendship, and I would discount him greatly on it, but I couldn’t do it for free.

I’m so fed up with arguing with him about it.  Now I’m to the point of completely ignoring him.  Dude, get a freakin’ clue already.  I said no.  I said I won’t do it.  I said I can’t do it.  What more do I have to say?

By the way, for a friend who wants me to do so much for free, he wouldn’t even give me a small discount on a bed frame last year.  What would he think if I walked in and demanded he give me the bed for free?
