I’m doing something tomorrow night that I haven’t done in a very long time…6 years to be exact. I’m going to a high school football game. My old high school, The Walhalla Razorbacks, will be playing Hubby’s old high school, The Liberty Red Devils, so I promised my little cousin we’d go to the game with her. We normally end up in Liberty on Friday nights anyway because we usually eat dinner with Hubby’s parents, and the game is at Liberty this year.
I remember when I used to spend every single Friday night at the high school football games. Of course I grew out of it like most high schoolers do, but back then it was the place to be on Fridays. Then after the game you went to the Last Quarter dance in the city gym.
My cousin has been dealing with an eating disorder for about a year. She was taking pills like Leptovox to help her lose weight. She was eating normally, but she was also taking laxatives religiously. She’s also ADHD, and she started taking double her dose of Adderall when she found out it could be a weight suppressent. This all came about because she wanted to be a cheerleader, but the other girls at school ridiculed her, told her she was too fat to wear a cheerleader’s uniform because she isn’t stick thin. She’s by no means fat. She can’t be more than 115 wet, and it’s shameful that 15 year old girls would act this way.
She’s battled with her weight issues for months, and after seeking help, she’s dealing with it the right way. I’m proud of her for taking the steps to get the help she needs, and asking her mom to find her help. No one caught her doing these things. She realized what she was doing was wrong, and she asked for the help.
Now while dealing with all this she’s pretty much been a shut in for months, going to school and coming home each day. She doesn’t go out with her friends, doesn’t go to the movies, football games, or just shopping to hang out. She wasn’t punished and prevented from doing those things. She chose not to because she wanted to concentrate on getting well. Now, if the girl wants to go to a football game, by God I’m going to take her.
