Messing With The Server

Yes Everyday Randomness is down right now, and nope I’m not freaking out.  For once it’s purposely offline.  My host decided to upgrade all their servers last week, and even though it didn’t cause any problems with my own blogs, it did cause problems with my friend Connie’s blog which is hosted on the same rented server.

I’ve spent the past two days reading through documentation, error logs, Wordpress forums, and troubleshooting files to figure out how to fix the 500 error she’s received every time she’s logged in since the server upgrade.

My eyes keep crossing on me, but I still have yet to figure out what the exact problem is.  My friend Moses, who owns the server, has taken everything offline to run some checks of his own.  We’re pretty sure it’s not a problem with the entire server because like I said my own blog hosted there isn’t experiencing any problems.

Hopefully we can get this figured out soon because it’s driving us both crazy!  I feel like it’s something that’s got to be right under my nose, but I keep overlooking it.  I’ve exhausted all other possibilities.

Anyway this is exactly why I’m glad that I don’t host all of my blogs on the same server.  I do use the same host for this blog, but it’s located on a different server.  My motorcycle blog is on a different host all together.  Some of my other blogging buddies are always asking me why I pay extra for a different host, but now you can see exactly why.  If something goes wrong I don’t want to be stuck having all my sites down at once.  At least this way I know I’ve got one up and running somewhere.

Messing With Layouts

Please bare with me while I’m messing with my layout.  I know I keep changing it, but I’m having some problems.  The one I really like keeps messing up my comments, and the next one I chose gave me a few different problems.  I’m trying to find one that I like enough to stick with it for awhile.  I’m horrible about getting tired of layouts and changing them up all the time, and I’m trying to move away from that.

The True Story of The Internet

Times like this I really need TiVo or Charter’s DVR. Last night I was flipping through the channels, and I stopped on Discovery when I realized they were running a special about Google called Download: The True Story of the Internet. The special was all about the startup of Google, and I saw some very interesting stuff.

I watched the part where Excite totally turned down Google when they were approached to buy the company for $1 million. That’s laughable now that Google’s worth is in the billion dollar range. I would have loved to have watched the entire show, but I tuned in late, and my eyes were closing on me.

I would have loved to had the chance to watch the entire show, but oh well. The next two episodes look pretty interesting, too. The March 29th show looks even better.

This is the story of the internet has changed society and how a new breed of entrepreneurs are shaping our digital futures.

I wonder if that one will have anything about bloggers in it?
